The group was founded in 1965 in Los Angeles. Founding members of the band were Bob „The Bear“ Hite (vocals) and Alan „Blind Owl“ Wilson (guitar, vocals, harmonica). Later joined Henry „Sunflower“Vestine (guitar, formerly of Frank Zappa’s The Mothers of Invention), Larry’s „The Mole“ Taylor (bass) and Frank Cook (drums). Previously played Stuart Brotman, Mike Perlowin, John Fahey, Mark Andes (later at Spirit and Jo Jo Gunne) and Keith Sawyer in the course of the first year in the short term together with Wilson and Hite in the band.

Her first album was released in 1967 after her appearance at the Monterey Pop Festival.The second album Boogie with Canned Heat from 1968 was more successful and made Canned Heat one of the hottest bands in the hippie and blues scene on the West Coast of the United States. 1969 followed the double album Living the Blues, which gave them the biggest hit with Going Up the Country, where Tank Harrigan (Ray Charles Band) played the flute. In addition, the band also appeared at the Woodstock Festival. Canned Heat Sunset and the Boogie is a fine Compilation with their best tracks and comes on marbled Vinyl, strictly limited on 1.111 pc.
